New Lesbian Shows — Yes, We Have New Ones!

Just when things were looking kind of bleak in terms of lesbian TV shows, suddenly there is much to be excited about.

  • On the big screen, Hannah Free is making women nuts coast-to-coast. Starring Sharon Gless, Hannah Free is a full length feature film that will probably appeal to the Desert Hearts fans, meaning those of us who are at least in their 30s. However, the film follows the main characters at various ages, so hopefully younger lesbians will enjoy the movie, too.
  • Now that Guiding Light has finished, Crystal Chappell is taking on a web series called Venice that will be based on the character she played on Guiding Light. Chapell, along with Producer/Writer Kim Turrisi, talks about the new series on the website and describes it as “a show about families, and life, and all the simplicity of it, and the turmoil of it. We’re going to be following a character named Gina who is a designer, and she is a gay woman.” Venice stars some of Crystal’s Guiding Light co-stars, including Jessica Leccia (Natalia Rivera), Jordan Clarke (Billy Lewis), and Daniel Cosgrove (Bill Lewis). The series also stars One Life to Live actress Hilary B. Smith as Guya and Elizabeth Keener as Lara.
  • True Blood, the HBO vampire series, is getting Evan Rachel Wood to play their vampire in residence. Movieline asked Wood about her character on True Blood. She said, “She’s 400-years-old. Her name’s Sophie-Anne, and she’s the Vampire Queen of Louisiana. There’s a queen for every state, and that’s hers. And she’s kind of a cross between Patrick Bateman and Paris Hilton. She’s crazy. She’s just crazy. And she’s a lesbian.”
  • The new incarnation of Melrose Place has a bisexual character played by Katie Cassidy, daughter of 70s heart throb David Cassidy, orignator of the mullet, formerly called the shag. :-)   There are rumors online that a lesbian character will be added in addition to the bisexual character.
  • Jill Bennett has been busy. Her movie And Then Came Lola has been at film festivals this summer, and she has her web series, We Have to Stop Now.
  • And let’s not forget the return of Anyone But Me, the fabulous web series by Susan Miller and Tina Cesa Ward. If you haven’t caught season one, WATCH IT NOW. The show is really well written, filmed, and acted. They deserve our support.

We at L-word.com and AlicesChart.com will be hosting fan fiction, fan art, fan videos, fan photos, and more to support all these shows. Please contribute your fan creations at www.AlicesChart.com.
