Elisabeth Keener and Alicia Willis – they were absolutely amazing, staying in their roles as Dawn Denbo and her lover Cindi even outside of the show. Alicia Willis was actually six-months pregnant and Elizabeth kept joking that it was her baby. She also told us that using the phrase “and this is my lover Cindi” all the time was her idea. It was used in the script only once at the beginning but she thought that it would be hilarious to use it all the time to show the possessive nature of Dawn Denbo.

During Q&A’s they still acted as a couple, making jokes about each other and their characters. Before they auditioned, they watched the show but not religiously and also knew a few people on the show and it was fun to watch. They were also the only two people to audition for the roles of Dawn Denbo and her lover Cindi. After the audition they got a call about three days later and their first scene was going to be the three-some with Kate.

The three-some scene with Shane was Alicia’s first time kissing a woman. It was done on a closed set with only a few people who were watching. Alicia said that it was a little bit embarrassing with all the camera angles and positions because she had never done anything like that before in her career. But also after the show Alicia prefers working with women because they look after each other and are very supportive. Most men she worked with spent more time looking in a mirror than she did.

Elizabeth said that they actually portrayed a real couple of a bar owners from LA who owns “Girlbar” and after the season was over, she went to that club and was a little nervous because she didn’t know how they will take it. The owners gave her a hug and said that they absolutely loved the characters. They were overjoyed that they made it into The L Word through the characters of Dawn Denbo and her lover.
