Interview with Tess Gerritsen at RizzlesCon

Wednesday, August 8th, 2012

By LanaRus

Tess Gerritsen is the woman who gave us Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles. She was invited to the RizzlesCon along with the cast and even though Sasha Alexander, Lorraine Bracco and Janet Tamaro were unable to attend, Tess was only too happy to come and spend time with the supportive fans. Her latest Rizzoli & Isles book, “The Last to Die”, is coming out on August 28 and Tess talked to me about Rizzoli & Isles inception, the challenges of writing, and her latest book.

L-word: How did you come up with the idea to write about two strong female characters in a world dominated by men?

TG: It happened by accident. I started off with the character of Jane Rizzoli. She was a minor character in the book “The Surgeon”, a homicide cop who was having problems dealing with her male colleagues because it’s a real macho field and they are not too happy about women being in their field. So in that particular book Jane was supposed to die because she wasn’t that likable and I didn’t think she was anything but a minor character.

L-word: When I read that book I did see her as being very angry all the time and unhappy because of the male cops but I understood why and I really liked her.

TG: Good and she really grew on me while I was writing that book and I thought that Jane was an interesting woman. So I wrote the next book about her. She was the main character and I introduced a secondary character in that story, called Maura Isles, and she was again a minor character. By the third book I thought that these two women are both interesting and I want them both in the series. And as the ten-book series progressed these two women became better and better friends. They began to trust each other. They are both excellent at what they do and they understood that about each other. So it came about just because they are professionals, they are strong and they are capable. That’s the kind of female professional I’m aware of. They were the ones I worked with when I was a doctor. They really mirror my own experience in the workforce.

RizzlesCon 2012 – Report

Last weekend I attended the first ever RizzlesCon, a convention organized by the fans of a TNT network’s show “Rizzoli & Isles.” Liv Moreno, one of the event’s organizers, said, “We came up with the idea during season 1 actually. A lot of people were really interested and these conventions are very common with the fans of such shows as “Star Trek”, “Xena”, and so on. Joy (Thomas) is a professional convention organizer and I help to run a somewhat popular Rizzlesgirls Blog and so she asked me to help and this is how we ended up doing the convention.”

L10 Convention – Birmingham, UK (August 17-19)

Saturday, April 28th, 2012

By LanaRus

Well, we knew this day would come. We are about to witness the latest and the last Starfury L Convention. Of course…and I’m using my favorite cliché here…nothing is final until it is written in the stone. However, according to Starfury, the L10 Convention is indeed the last one.

Unfortunately, the whole cast won’t be there but the line-up is pretty great. So far, four amazing guests had been announced and we should expect two more.

Rachel Shelley hasn’t made an appearance at the L Conventions in awhile, especially since she became a mother so L10 will give everyone a chance to meet her again and find out what she has been up to.

Pam Grier needs no introduction. She brought the house down at L6 Convention, when she insisted on re-enacting the dance scene with Rose Rollins from episode 607. She will entertain the hell out of you and she will make you laugh so hard you’ll either pee your pants or won’t be able to move your jaw for awhile…or both.

Alex Hedison made a great impression with fans at L6 Convention with her great sense of humor and her way of answering questions with props and acting and with her impressive photography.

Janina Gavankar is the last guest that was announced so far and just like Pam Grier, Janina was always one of the most exciting guests at the conventions. Her unstoppable energy, auctioning skills and multi-talented personality added fun, excitement and lots of laughter to the Q&A sessions.

Sean promised two more guests and they will be announced later.

I know that many fans were hoping and expecting to see Jennifer Beals as one of the guests for the L10, especially after she cancelled her appearance at L8 Convention. And L10 being the last convention it would be a dream come true for many fans of the show and fans of Jennifer.

Here’s Sean Harry’s reply regarding more The L Word guests and fans requests for L10 that he posted a few months back:

Of the five ladies that I invited, 4 have said yes and 1 said no. Just waiting to tie up the details with their managers…I invited Jennifer (as I did for L9). She responded that she was deeply honoured to be invited, and happy that the events were still taking place, but decided to decline on being a guest.

Jennifer was a guest at L5, and I think did a fantastic job. An incredible guest talk, and she was a joy to work with. I doubt we’ll see her at another event, but at least she “did her bit for the fans” and did the one. She’s very shy in real life, and was very nervous and apprehensive about attending one, so I’m happy that she was a guest at L5 and had a good time…”

Here you have it. So if you have never been to L Conventions, here’s your last chance to attend a three-day event full of fun and meeting friends and The L Word cast members. To get more information about the L10 Convention, go to SeanHarry, com

Interview with Stamie Karakasidis and Tracy Ryerson at L9 – November 2011

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

Those who attended L8 last March or L9 might still remember their first reaction to the two stars of The Real L Word reality show and a real-life couple, Stamie Karakasidis and Tracy Ryerson. I remember mine very well. They were hilarious, down to earth and very entertaining. I’ve met both of them before in Los Angeles but I haven’t had a chance to really see them in action.

Interview with Heather Peace at L9 – November 2011

Monday, November 28th, 2011

It’s always such a pleasure to talk to Heather Peace. She’s very intelligent, funny, and down to earth and she makes everyone feel at ease in her company. And listening to her beautiful British accent only makes the interviews so much more enjoyable. Since I last talked to her at L8, Heather has been pretty busy with filming second season of “Lip Service” and “Waterloo Road”, and travelling around the UK with gigs and full-band concerts.
