L-word.com – Site History

Thursday, April 11th, 2013

This is a re-post of an article that was in our original news section. We’re going to be losing part of the old site in order to move forward, so we’re putting here in the “new” News Archive.

Posted approximately January 2006 at the beginning of Season 3.

Yes, we’ve been online for two years! In some respects, I can’t believe two whole years have past. On the other hand, we’re always moving at such break-neck speeds that we wonder where the time as gone. Take a little trip down memory lane with me with this visual flashback and a few stories.

Below, you’ll see the image of our very first site. Don’t laugh! Obviously, we’ve come a long, long way in just two years. This site was thrown together in about 2 days. Literally. And yes, we know it shows!

I had read about the show and seen a float (yes a float!) advertising The L Word in a parade in Provincetown, MA during Carnival Week in August 2003. From August until just after Christmas, I had the show in the back of her mind, thinking of it once in a while, knowing that it had the potential to be very popular. I had not thought of doing a fan site in that time–just that this show had the potential to be really big. It was just after Christmas 2003 that I woke up one morning with the idea of “I need to do a site for this new lesbian show –and it must have fan fiction and discussion”. As some of you know, my only experience with fan sites and fan fiction dated back to the “Kim and Kerry” story on ER. That was the inspiration for this fan site.

So, I called my buddy Jared at www.uptask.com and said, “Jared, do up something FAST with these links….” the ones you see at the left below. I didn’t know how I was going to populate the pages, but I figured once the show got started, all of you would help me do that. Boy, was I right on the money with that one.

On December 29. 2003, we went live with what you see below. Just over 2 weeks later, January 18, 2004, the show premiered.

Casting Now: Real L Word DOCUMENTARY

Monday, April 1st, 2013

The producers of The Real L Word (Ilene Chaiken and Magical Elves) are looking for lesbians with important and compelling stories to tell for a documentary-approach to lesbian life beyond the coasts.  The project will focus on the experience of living as a lesbian in areas throughout the country where non-acceptance is still the norm.

We are currently casting for the project and are trying to get the word out to as many people as possible.  All the casting information can be found at reallworddocumentary.com, including a little more about the project and what to include in submissions.

If anyone from L-word.com is selected, be sure to let webmaster@ L-word.com about it! (remove that space after the @).

Good luck!

Alexandra Hedison: New Exhibit (3 November-15 December 2012)

Sunday, October 28th, 2012

“We tell ourselves stories in order to live.” — Joan Didion, “The White Album”

Diane Rosenstein Fine Art is pleased to announce the gallery’s first solo exhibition of photographs by Alexandra Hedison. On view will be a new series of work: Everybody Knows This is Nowhere(2008 -2012) as as well as a related group of four photographs from (Re)building (2005).
Created over a period of four years, the new photographs in “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere,” record the mercurial terrain beneath the Malibu beach houses where Hedison grew up. These images are both vivid and abstract, subjugating the landscape to painterly compositions and surreal tableaus. The new photographs in “Nowhere” map a subliminal geography once hidden from view; in the process, they become the memory itself.

Alexandra Hedison (USA, b. 1969) is a contemporary fine art photographer based in London and Los Angeles. Committed to the decisiveness and precision of working with large and medium format film, she addresses the interstices between tradition and novelty by exploring the transitions between the two. For the last decade, Hedison’s photographs have been exhibited internationally in both solo and group shows. Her work is included in public and private collections, including Barclays Capital (UK), CQ Global (Singapore), Participant Media (Beverly Hills), and The Grison Art Foundation (Washington, DC).

Jennifer Beals and Lauren Lee Smith in New Movie

Tuesday, August 28th, 2012

Jennifer Beals and Lauren Lee Smith have joined writer-director Terry Miles’ indie film, “Cinemanovel.”

Smith, who played Lara on The L Word, stars as Grace, a young woman whose estranged father is a famous filmmaker. When he dies, she organizes a retrospective of his films, uncovering destructive patterns in his life that mirror her own. Beals will play Grace’s best friend and confidant.

The pair previously appeared in Miles’ “A Night for Dying Tigers,” which played at the Toronto Film Festival in 2010.

“Cinemanovel’s” $100,000 budget is financed by Miles and Smith, who will also produce with Ines Eisses and Kristine Cofsky attached as co-producers.

Miles said, “We decided to self-finance to maintain creative control of the film.”

Smith added, “I know we will create a beautiful film and by keeping control of it we can ensure that it will not just get lost in the mix as is the case with so many Canadian indies.” Filming may be in Vancouver, where The L Word was also filmed.

The filmmakers have also turned to crowd-funding site Indiegogo to help raise $25,000 “enhancement” funds.

The film is set to go into production September.
